Facts About SRHA
The Southern Regional Health Authority (SRHA), is a statutory body of the Ministry of Health. SRHA is one of the four Regional Health Au- thorities that emerged from the National Health Services act of 1997 which authorised the decentralization of the health care system through the creation of regional health authorities. Regional manage- ment aims at improving the quality of health care with more efficient use of resources and timely decision making. SRHA is responsible for the delivery of health care services to the residents of Clarendon, Manchester and St. Elizabeth. It is managed by a board of directors comprising of fifteen (15) members appointed by the Ministry of Health. The Chief Executive Officer is the Regional Director (RD), who reports directly to the chairman of the board. The Regional Director has the responsibility for the day-to-day ad- ministration of the business of the authority, directing and controlling the development of strategic and operational plans for health services in the region. Each parish is managed by a Parish Manager who accounts for ex- penditure of monies allocated for the delivery of public health services in the parish and directs and controls the development of strategic and operational plans for health services in that parish. In addition there are hospital management committees and parish health com- mittees comprising representatives of professional and community groups.
The SRHA delivers service through its network of seventy four (74) health centres, five (5) hospitals, one (1) community hospital and two (2) rural maternity centres. There are approximately three thousand (3000) health and administrative workers.

885 Healthcare Workers Honoured for Selfless Service During and After Hurricane Melissa
Some 885 healthcare workers, primarily from St. Elizabeth, were recognised for their selfless service, dedication and resilience during and after the passage of Hurricane Melissa, at a Grand Awards Gala hosted by the Southern Regional Health Authority (SRHA) on Thursday, October 8, 2026.
The event, held under the theme “Celebrating Our Healthcare Heroes
Resilient Through the Storm”, at Lovers Leap in St. Elizabeth, honoured healthcare professionals who continued providing essential health services despite suffering personal losses and facing dangerous conditions in the aftermath of the hurricane.
Regional Director of the SRHA, Mr. Michael Bent explained that the awards ceremony was organised to formally recognise the extraordinary sacrifices made by healthcare workers who continued serving under difficult and, in some instances, life-threatening conditions.
“Your work is heroic. We believed that with your sacrifice and heroic works, we could do no less than to ensure that we take you away from the hustle and bustle, even while others are at work now because of the nature of the service. Every member of staff in the parish will receive something from the Regional Health Authority as a token of appreciation for your work” Mr. Bent added.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr. the Hon. Christopher Tufton, commended the workers for placing the needs of their patients and communities above their own, even as they grappled with the devastation caused by the hurricane.
“The difference between you and the crisis is that you have to pick up your marble and go to work even though you are victims too. That takes more than just dedication. It takes a level of commitment that many (more)

people don’t have and don’t understand…of what the healthcare worker has to do” the Health Minister said.
Reflecting on his visit to Black River immediately following the hurricane, Dr. Tufton recalled the extensive destruction throughout the town, including at Black River Hospital, where healthcare workers continued attending to patients despite the damage to the facility and their own homes.
He noted that some employees remained on duty for days without knowing the full extent of the damage to their properties.
“You had to function while you were trying to recover yourselves. That is called strength, that’s called resilience and that is what heroism is all about” Dr. Tufton added.
Special recognition was also given to other staff members who had assisted the team in St. Elizabeth, particularly a team who spent 48 hours in Holland Bamboo in the parish, trying to clear the route to help staff and patients.

J$60 Investment for Black River Hospital to Improve Maternal and Neonatal Care
Healthcare services at the Black River Hospital in St. Elizabeth have received a significant boost following the donation of approximately J$60 million in medical equipment and supplies from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The donation, which was officially handed over on Friday, October 9, 2026, includes neonatal, maternal and other critical hospital equipment aimed at improving patient care and strengthening the hospital’s capacity as it continues to recover from the impact of Hurricane Melissa.
Regional Director of the Southern Regional Health Authority (SRHA), Mr. Michael Bent, welcomed the contribution, describing it as an important investment in the health and well-being of the people of St. Elizabeth.
“It is more than just handing over of equipment and supplies. It represents continued investment. I just want the Church of the Latter-day Saints to know that it is not just a giving, but you are investing in the lives of people, of citizens that use the Black River Hospital” Mr. Bent said.
He explained that approximately J$7.85 million of the donation covers neonatal equipment and supplies, including infant incubators, radiant infant warmers, infant resuscitation equipment, paediatric blankets and baskets.
The remaining J$52.2 million covers other essential hospital equipment, including patient monitors, transport ventilators, warming systems, pharmacy refrigerators, stretchers, hospital beds and electrocardiogram (ECG) machines.
“For our healthcare workers, it means having the tools they need to do their jobs effectively. For our mothers and babies, it means improved capacity to provide care when they are most needed. And for the (more)

people of St. Elizabeth, it means a stronger Black River Hospital” Mr. Bent continued.
The Regional Director noted that the donation comes at a critical time as the hospital continues its recovery following Hurricane Melissa, which caused significant damage to its infrastructure and disrupted healthcare services.
He pointed out that despite the challenges, healthcare workers remained committed to serving patients, even while managing the personal effects of the hurricane.
Meanwhile, Mission President of the Jamaica Kingston Mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Mr. Royce Britton, expressed appreciation for the dedication of healthcare workers and reaffirmed the Church’s commitment to supporting communities through humanitarian initiatives.
“We recognise so many needs. And the fact that we are here today actually shows the great need that this institution has. And so we know that there are many needs. We want to do more. We wish we can do more. We plan to do more.”
He added that the donation reflects the Church’s belief in serving others and expressed hope for continued collaboration with healthcare institutions across Jamaica.

Hundreds Benefit from Renewed Hope Intervention in Hurricane-Affected Carisbrook Ten months after Hurricane Melissa disrupted livelihoods, housing and essential services, approximately 350 residents and students in Carisbrook, St. Elizabeth, have benefitted from health, wellness and social support brought directly into the community through the “Renewed Hope” Health and Wellness Recovery Fair held on Thursday, September 3, 2026 at the Carisbrook Primary School in Maggotty, St. Elizabeth.
The intervention, led by the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Jamaica, forms part of planned post-hurricane recovery activities in St. Elizabeth. The community was identified based on its vulnerabilities and the need to improve residents’ access to essential health and social services.
Carisbrook was selected as the second community for the initiative, bringing coordinated health, wellness and social support services closer to residents as the community continues its recovery from Hurricane Melissa.
At the Carisbrook Primary School, residents and families were able to access a range of services in one location, including health screenings, blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol checks, nutrition information, dental services, psychosocial support, social work, hygiene and water safety information, physical activity and other health and social services.

Michelle Smith, Health Promotion and Education Officer for St. Elizabeth, said the intervention was an important way of bringing support to a community that continues to feel the effects of the hurricane.
“I want to say thank you to the Ministry of Health and Wellness, UNICEF and Southern Regional Health Authority to be here with us today in Carisbrook. It is really a good initiative as we offer this renewed hope to the community that was devastated by Hurricane Melissa.”
The fair also provided residents with practical information to support their health and wellbeing as recovery continues.
For Gloria Stevens, a retired teacher from Carisbrook Primary School, the opportunity to access services in her community was particularly valuable.
“So I came and I thought that it was well organised and it was good on a whole, it was a good venture and I did the blood work, blood pressure and cholesterol and I was happy with the result that I got.”
While the recovery fair was a one-day intervention, it forms part of a wider Targeted Community Intervention (TCI) in Carisbrook. The St. Elizabeth health team will continue community engagement and support based on needs identified as the community moves through recovery.
For Stacy Wright, Behaviour Change Officer at the Ministry of Health and Wellness, the success of this programme is crucial.

“Success would mean seeing Carisbrook move from recovery to resilience, with healthier residents, stronger connections to essential services, greater confidence in responding to future challenges, and a renewed sense of hope for the future. Most importantly, the goal is to see lasting change that extends beyond a single intervention and supports the community in restoring its well-being and building a stronger future,” she said.
