TRN and NIS for your first job
A job in Jamaica needs two numbers: your TRN, which your employer quotes when it pays tax on your wages,1 and your NIS number, for national insurance.2 Here is how to get each.
01Your TRN: free, and at any tax office
A TRN costs nothing.1 Apply at the Taxpayer Registration Centre, 116 East Street, Kingston, or at any tax office in the island.3
The form is the "Application for Taxpayer Registration Number (Individuals)".3 You can also start it online: make a login on TAJ's website, choose "apply for TRN", complete the form, then sign it and send it in with your documents.3
02What to bring for a TRN
Bring photo ID: a passport, driver's licence, or national or voter's ID.3 TAJ also lists a work or school ID, with your birth certificate.3 A photograph must be certified, for example by a Justice of the Peace.3
If you're under 18, a parent or guardian signs the application.3
If someone collects it for you, they need your letter of authorisation, signed and stamped by a Justice of the Peace or a notary.1
03Your NIS number
Everyone aged 18 to 70 who works in insurable employment must be registered with the National Insurance Scheme.2
To register, fill in the "Application for National Insurance Number" and take it to your parish office with proof of age: a birth certificate or passport.2 You're given a card with your NIS number and name.2
04What NIS is for
Your contributions count towards benefits for employment injury, sickness, invalidity, retirement, maternity for domestic workers, and your family if you die.2
05Once you have them
Keep a PDF of each card on your phone, so it's ready when an application asks for it.
